Two weeks ago when I went into the Prison, and visited the Sri Lankan girls in their Cell, I was struck by the look on the face of a young woman by name Malini. I have never seen a sadder or distraught young woman! She looked very scared and seemed to have cried a lot since coming to prison. I had completed my time with the girls: listening to their stories, praying, and sharing the Word. I once again noticed unhappiness on Malini’s face and decided to stay back and talk to her alone.

She told me that she had lived and worked in a Lebanese home for five years without being paid her monthly salary. Every time she asked for her salary her employer would tell her she would get it soon, or, sometimes they would lie and tell her that they had already sent the money to her family in Sri Lanka. She believed them naively. Just so she would not escape from home, the family always kept a close eye on her, took away her passport & other legal papers. Eventually when Malini protested, they threw her out of the house with only her clothes on her back. She was picked up by the police wandering on the road and brought to the prison.

When I heard her story my heart went out to her and I and was deeply saddened. I prayed with her and told her that nothing was impossible for Jesus. I asked her to lay her burden at the feet of Jesus and read the Bible regularly and wait and see what God has in store for her. When I visited the prison the following week, I saw Malini and assumed that nothing much must have changed in her life. I prayed with all the girls, told them a Bible story, and played a couple of games with them. As I was getting ready to leave, Malini came up to me, sat next to me. I noticed there was something different about her face. There was a sense of peace! Then she began narrating to me events that were nothing short of a miracle! She said, a couple days back her employer came to visit her at the prison then she gave Malini all the back pay for the past five years! I was shocked because this is unheard of in Lebanon. Normally, unless the police and the courts intervene, the maids can never expect to get back their money. I did believe her easily and kept asking her if she had the money? She said the money was in a safe place with the CARITAS (The Catholic Relief Agency) and she would receive it before she was deported back to her home country. But what really made me happy was, she said “sister, you asked me to pray to Jesus and read my Bible; I have been doing that and will continue to do so. Jesus answered my prayers!!

I felt so happy when I heard her story and I know that only our God can move mountains and nothing is impossible for HIM. I am eager to get the full story from her, and may be a picture of her (We are not allowed to take camera to prison but she said there may be a picture of her with her luggage, kept in a safe room). Our God will surprise you when you are least expecting!!

God Bless you all,

SARAH
