Daily news reports reflect the indescribable results of the 7.0 earthquake that brought destruction on January 12 to Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.  Medical professionals are, and will be, urgently needed to respond to the injuries of thousands of victims.

International Ministries missionary Kristy Engel in the Dominican Republic (DR) is coordinating medical response teams who will travel from La Romana, DR to Haiti each week in February.  Being a pediatric nurse practitioner, Engel is aware of the great need for volunteer doctors and a fewer number of nurse practitioners who will compose these rotating teams.

The Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, is the site where volunteers are to arrive each Sunday.  From there they will travel to Haiti on Mondays, work for the week and return to the DR on Saturdays.  Engel reports, “There is still a critical need for medical response in this area.  We are finding open fractures and wounds as well as many untreated injuries related to the earthquake.  I have found most functioning hospitals unable to accept further patients due to lack of medical supplies and personnel to treat them.”
