"Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality." Romans 12:13

Today we finished cleaning up after a great event. We are tired, but blessed. Each year we celebrate the coming of Christ with an invitation to our church family and friends to enjoy tamales, cider and homemade cookies in our home.

This year we also invited them to contribute to help our neighbors recently affected by flooding here in Costa Rica as well as our Haitian neighbors still reeling from the affects of the earthquake and cholera epidemic. Our Costa Rican friends brought non-perishables and hygiene supplies that filled our dining table as well as contributed $70 towards Haiti relief and $70 to support a local candle-making cooperative supporting the Centro de Transformación Mariposa.

Their generosity in the midst of their own limitations reminded me of how blessed I am to do ministry among my Costa Rican brothers and sisters. Their joy in giving as well as in singing, in significant conversations, and in appreciating the sweetness of the cookies served to them made all of our efforts worthwhile.

This Casa Abierta/Open House meant a lot to me because many of the recipes that I use to create the goodies I served come from my Nana who died this year. Each time I put another batch into the oven I thought of her and the welcome she always gave me in her home at Christmas time. Being able to share with God's people in need and practice hospitality is one way I can keep her ministry and memory alive.

I pray that this Christmas you, too can enjoy the blessing of sharing your lives and homes as if you were welcoming anew our Lord and Savior, Jesus who comes to us every day.

Blessings,
Mylinda
