Una Gran Hora para Compartir…

La ofrenda de emergencia para apoyar el proceso de rehabilitación de las familias en Lorca tras sus terremotos del pasado miércoles 11 de mayo, está en mano de la PIEB de Lorca quienes tan temprano como el lunes 30 comenzarán a organizar el comienzo de las obras de la parte del sótano que no está afectado. La idea es poder adecuarlo para tener allí sus reuniones y a la vez un lugar donde poder organizar todo lo que sigan recibiendo para poder ayudar más y mejor a quienes lo necesiten, en la medida de sus posibilidades. Cabe señalar que tras estar como nómadas (sin templo) desde el 2006, se habían estado reuniendo en tiempos recientes en las facilidades de la Cruz Roja de Lorca que también quedó destruida por los terremotos. Por lo tanto, están reuniéndose en el estacionamiento de una vecina donde para cada reunión les toca llevar y acomodar las sillas, el púlpito, la Biblia, los elementos de la Santa Cena, el sistema de sonido y el sistema de música…

Visita de primera mano: templo de la IEB de Lorca…
El martes 24 de mayo, la pastora Abigail Castillo, de la IEB Murcia, vino a Valencia para unos trámites personales. Nos coordinamos para que al nosotros regresar de nuestra última reunión del Curso de Formación en Dénia pudiéramos viajar juntas en su vehículo, que estaba cargado hasta el techo gracias a la diligencia y prontitud de las hermanas de UMMBE en IEB Valencia-Quart que hicieron un estupendo trabajo en tan sólo 3 días con unos frutos impresionantes; recogieron una importante cantidad de comida y utensilios para nuestras familias en Lorca.
     El miércoles 25 nos dirigimos a Lorca, para ver a nuestras hermanas de la UMMBE que ya habíamos conocido en varias oportunidades y conocer a las personas de la congregación en Lorca que también están afectadas por los terremotos. Abigail pudo notar que los ánimos ya van mejorando y, aunque la situación sigue siendo la misma (de momento), ya van recobrando esa alegría y buen humor que siempre les ha caracterizado. Es impactante verles conscientes de que como iglesia tienen una responsabilidad de ayudar a su prójimo y ser luz en medio de tanto desastre. Es inspirador ver que aunque están en la misma o peor situación que otros vecinos de Lorca (cada remodelación / reconstrucción de vivienda ronda en los US$28,600), las familias de la iglesia ya están pensando cómo responder a sus necesidades. De hecho, de los paquetes de distribución que hicieron el viernes 20 ya han ayudado a varias familias que ni siquiera conocían la iglesia; cosa que ha sido de testimonio para quienes han recibido estas ayudas.
     Les llevamos todo lo que las familias de Valencia-Quart habían aportado, más algunas cosas de Murcia que metimos entre los rincones del vehículo y lo descargamos todo en una habitación del templo. Lo clasificamos y se ha quedado allí para que las hermanas (activas en la Obra Social de la iglesia) lo distribuyan según las necesidades. El sábado mismo iban a hacerlo.
     Habiendo tenido la experiencia de construcción en el templo de San Carlos, Chile, y conociendo los esfuerzos y sacrificios que conlleva, fue sobrecogedor ver los daños causados a la estructura de la nave principal. Las grietas del templo se han hecho más grandes (por las réplicas) y es preocupante ver cómo se han desplazado las paredes. En las fotos no siempre se aprecia bien, pero es impresionante… Estando allí llegó uno de los peritos o técnico con el presupuesto para la reconstrucción del templo y nos dejó suspirando profundo... El presupuesto ha sido corregido de 100.000 Euros a 130.000 Euros (US$185,900). Sin embargo, todos estamos seguros que Dios suplirá lo necesario, a través de muchas personas de dentro y fuera de nuestras iglesias de la UEBE. Por eso les animamos, amados y amadas de las ABC-USA/PR, a que aporten vuestro granito de arena. Llevamos a Puerto Rico presentaciones detalladas y testimonios en video de lo que hemos visto y oído.

Visita de primera mano: Asociación El Buen Camino…
Respecto al centro de la asociación cristiana de ayuda a la persona marginada, rehabilitación y acogida de mujeres y hombres, se sigue buscando un lugar apropiado para seguir con esta misión. En un principio se buscaba una nave para meter la maquinaria pero, los esfuerzos son para encontrar algo para largo plazo ya que las reconstrucciones (de ser autorizadas, los edificios están en punto rojo—máximo riesgo) tomarán mucho tiempo. Esto no es ni fácil ni rápido; hay que buscar un lugar que reúna las características necesarias para abrir este tipo de obra social. Sin embargo, estamos convencidos que Dios guiará a quienes están en esta búsqueda del sitio más adecuado.
     Pudimos visitar tanto la casa del campo que no se vio afectada por los terremotos (para los primeros seis meses del programa) donde hay 17 hombres residentes, la casa de las afueras de Lorca en dirección a Águilas que está en punto rojo—extremo peligro (para los siguientes seis meses intermedios del programa) donde habían 25 hombres residentes que han sido trasladados a la casa del campo y la casita para las mujeres a las afueras de Lorca también en punto rojo (7 al momento de los terremotos, quedan 4 por falta de espacio). El pastor Francisco Martinez, de la PIEB de Lorca y director del programa, nos explicó cómo funciona este ministerio de obra social que comenzó en el 1993 y la importancia de poder conseguir lugares apropiados para alojar a estas personas en rehabilitación. El Buen Camino tiene como práctica ofrecer ayuda inmediata a quien lo necesite, sin mirar a quién, por el tiempo que sea necesario. A estas casas llegan personas de diferentes nacionalidades, condiciones sociales y económicas y todas necesitando una palabra de restauración y rehabilitación.

Tres testimonios del amor de Dios…
El primer testimonio es cómo ninguna persona del hogar fue afectada físicamente, por protección divina. No estaban dentro de las casas… más de 50 personas, incluyendo los 2 trabajadores sociales, el sicólogo y las personas encargadas de los hombres y de las mujeres. El miércoles es uno de los dos días de hacer deporte, por lo que no estaban en los hogares…
     El segundo testimonio es haber conocido a la encargada del hogar de acogida de mujeres, Juana. Ella llegó al hogar como residente, por 15 días. De eso hace más de cinco años… ya no volvió a salir. En el hogar encontró amor, comprensión, dignidad y a Jesucristo, su Señor y Salvador y su razón de vivir… Juana da testimonio del poder transformador del Señor y ha entregado su vida a este ministerio en forma voluntaria. Ella dice “si Dios lo hizo conmigo, que era basura, una nadie, lo puede hacer con cualquiera.” El gozo del Señor es evidente en esta mujer humilde, trabajadora y agradecida. Su testimonio es ciertamente impactante y conmovedor.
     La casa del campo está en condiciones para continuar con la primera etapa, pero está a su máxima capacidad con los 17 residentes. Los 25 que estaban en la casa del punto rojo deben ser reubicados de inmediato en otro lugar donde puedan continuar sus tratamientos. Las 4 mujeres que quedan necesitan un lugar donde vivir, que sea accesible para sus tratamientos y más apropiado que el cuartito blanco que les pudieron habilitar. Hace falta, con urgencia, un lugar más grande para albergar a más mujeres marginadas que necesitan de un oasis como el que El Buen Camino le ofreció a Juana. En estos años de ministerio, estas casas de acogida han servido a un promedio de 200 personas al año, con un promedio de rehabilitación del 46%. Muchas de estas personas han recibido a Jesucristo como Señor y Salvador y he ahí el tercer testimonio; la cantidad de personas rehabilitadas que se han puesto manos a la obra para que El Buen Camino continúe sirviendo a la comunidad a su máxima capacidad.

Lorca te necesita, oh sí…
La UEBE y su Ministerio de Obra Social, bajo la dirección de Manuel Sarrias y Daniel Banyuls respectivamente, siguen recibiendo iniciativas de parte de las iglesias de nuestra amada Unión, tales como Murcia, Valencia-Quart y Cerdanyola, entre otras. Varias organizaciones del exterior también han mostrado interés y han enviado sus aportaciones financieras. Tal como expresamos al comienzo, la ayuda de emergencia de nuestras iglesias (OGHS-Lorca) ya está en mano de nuestros hermanos que están ejerciendo una mayordomía responsable de cada ofrenda. Pero, Lorca te necesita… oh, sí…
     Éste es un esfuerzo, como en Haití, Chile, China, Pakistán, Japón y más recientemente Myanmar y EE.UU., que requerirá de semanas, meses y años para la completa restauración de estas familias, iglesias y comunidades. Algunos siguen sin poder abrir sus correos electrónicos, o los abren cuando pueden en casa de algún familiar o amigo… Otros están sin teléfonos fijos y no siempre funcionan sus móviles por los daños a las antenas. El 80% de la población de Lorca ha tenido que recurrir a arriendos fuera de la ciudad o con familiares. En el campamento quienes quedan son mayormente los migrantes, mayormente marroquíes y ecuatorianos, que no regresan a sus países de origen para no perder lo poco que tenían. Se respira un ambiente de desasosiego, de ciudad fantasma, de soledad…
     Con tan alto porcentaje de desempleo en España (20.05%, la más alta desde 1997, de 25% en Lorca), muchos de ellos de la iglesia en Lorca que también han quedado sin viviendas en un 80%, es humanamente imposible reconstruir y restaurar tanto las viviendas, como el templo, como las casas de albergue… Pero con Dios todo es posible, pues todas las cosas obran para bien… Os rogamos de todo corazón, en la medida de vuestras capacidades y lo que el Señor ponga en vuestro corazón, que apoyemos a estas familias e iglesia en necesidad. El martes 31 el secretario general de la UEBE, el pastor Manuel Sarrias, se dirige a Lorca para reunirse con las autoridades de la ciudad y participar de un culto unido en Lorca. Desde el MOS, el pastor Daniel Banyuls continúa coordinando los esfuerzos de reconstrucción, en coordinación con el pastor Francisco Martínez y el comité coordinador. La pastora Abigail Castillo continúa coordinando desde su iglesia en Murcia y con la UMMBE, de la cual Carmen Sánchez (de Lorca) es presidenta nacional, el apoyo de iglesias locales cercanas. Sabemos que Dios seguirá siendo fiel de proveer tanto el querer como el hacer en cada hermano y hermana que lo disponga en su corazón.
     Cada uno de los hermanos y hermanas de Lorca, insisten en su profunda gratitud por todas las muestras de cariño que les llegan, de todas las formas posibles (llevamos dos videos al respecto). Sólo te recordamos que, como tantos otros lugares afectados en estos momentos, Lorca te necesita.

One Great Hour of Sharing…
The Emergency Relief Funds to support the reconstruction process for the families in Lorca after their earthquakes of last Wednesday, May 11th, is in the hands of the FBC of Lorca who will, as soon as Monday 30th, begin organizing the completion of the sanctuary’s basement that was not affected. The idea is to make it their meeting room and a place to organize the food and household items given to them to distribute to those in need as they are able. We must point out that after living as nomads (without a sanctuary) since 2006, they had been meeting at the Red Cross headquarters in Lorca that was crushed in the earthquakes. Therefore, they are now meeting at a neighbors’ house where they bring for each meeting plastic chairs, the pulpit, the Bible, the Communion set, and, the sound and music systems…

First-hand witness: FBC Lorca sanctuary…
On Tuesday, May 24th, Pastor Abigail Castillo, FBC Murcia, came to Valencia for some personal errands. We coordinated so that after our return from our last session of the leadership training and workshop in Dénia we could travel together in her car, which was full to the top thanks to the diligent and prompt action of the UMMBE (ABWM) in FBC Valencia-Quart that had spent three days to gather an impressive load of food and household items for the families in Lorca.
     On Wednesday 25th we left to Lorca to see our UMMBE sisters we had met in previous occasions and meet people from the congregation in Lorca who are also affected by the earthquakes. Abigail noticed the mood was improving and, despite the situation still being the same (for now), they are recovering the joy and good humor they are known for. It is impacting to see how aware they are that as a Church they are responsible to serve their neighbor and be a light in the midst of this disaster. It is inspiring to see how even when they are in the same or worse predicament as their neighbors in Lorca (each remodeling/reconstruction project is approximately US$28,600), the Church families are thinking of ways to respond to the communities’ needs. In fact, out of the distribution packages they prepared on Friday 20th they have already helped several families that are not from the Church; this has been a witness to those who have received these gifts.
     We brought all that the families in Valencia-Quart had gathered, plus some from Murcia that we squeezed in the car’s smallest of spaces left and unloaded it all to one of the less affected rooms in the sanctuary, classified it and left it for the women (in care of the Social Action Ministries in the church) to distribute as needed. They were already doing it on Saturday!
     With our previous construction experience in San Carlos, Chile, and knowing the efforts and sacrifices it entails, it was overwhelming to see the damages caused in the structure of the main building. The cracks in the sanctuary have become deeper (with the aftershocks) and it is worrisome to see the walls sliding through. Not always evident in the pics, but it is impressive… While there the experts came to provide a more accurate estimate for the reconstruction of the temple and we were left breathless... The budget has been updated from 100.000 Euros to 130.000 Euros (US$185,900). However, we are confident that God will supply for every need, through people within and outside of our churches in the UEBE. Therefore we encourage you, dear and beloved ABC-USA/PR, to send your love offering. We are bringing to Puerto Rico detailed presentations and video of what we have seen and heard.

First-hand witness: Asociación El Buen Camino (The Good Way Association)…
As for the headquarters for the Christian association to assist, rehab marginalized people and their women and men’s shelter, they continue to search for an appropriate place to continue their ministry. At first they thought to find a place to keep the machinery for their crafts and carpentry workshops, but their efforts are now concentrated in finding a long-term place as the reconstruction process (if authorized, as the buildings are with red dot—extreme danger) will be long term. This will not be easy or fast. They have to find a place according to the needs of this type of social ministry. However, we are convinced God will guide those who are seeking the most suitable place.
     We were able to visit the house in the countryside that was not affected by the earthquakes (for the first six months of the program) where there are 17 resident men, the red-dotted house in the outskirts of Lorca in the way to Águilas (for the next intermediate six months in the program) where 25 resident men lived that have been transferred temporarily to the countryside house, and, the little red-dotted house in the outskirts of Lorca (7 when the earthquakes struck, 4 left due to lack of space). Pastor Francisco Martínez, of FBC Lorca and association director, explained to u show the ministry started in 1993 and how important it is to find the appropriate places to house these people in the rehab program. El Buen Camino has the practice to offer immediate assistance to those in need, regardless of whom, for as long as needed. People from different nationalities, financial and social spheres and needing a word of restoration and rehabilitation come to this place.

Three testimonies of God’s love…
The first testimony is how none of the shelter residents were physically affected, by divine protection. None of them was at the shelter… more than 50 people, including the 2 social workers, the psychologist, and those in charge of the men and women. Wednesday’s is one of their two days for sports, so they were not inside the shelter…
     The second testimony is meeting the woman in charge of the women’s shelter, Juana. She arrived to the shelter as a resident herself, for 15 days. That was more than five years ago… she never left. In the shelter she found love, comprehension, dignity, and Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior and the reason for her life… Juana witnesses to the transforming power of our Lord and has given herself to this ministry as a volunteer. She says, “if God did it with me, trashy, a nobody, He can do it with anyone.” The joy of the Lord is evident in this humble, hard working, and grateful woman. Her testimony is certainly impacting and moving, to say the least.
     The house in the countryside is able to continue with the first phase, but with a maximum capacity of 17 residents. The 25 that were in the red-dotted house need to be immediately relocated in another place to continue their treatments. The 4 women left need a place to live, accessible to their treatments and more appropriate than the white little room they were arranging for them. They need, urgently, a bigger place to house these marginalized women in need of an oasis such as El Buen Camino offered Juana once. Through the years of ministry, these shelters have served an average of 200 people a year, with an average of rehabilitation of 46%. Many of these have received Jesus as their Lord and Savior and there is the third testimony; how many of these recovered people have put their hands on deck so that El Buen Camino can continue serving the community to the fullest of their capacity.

Lorca needs you, oh yes…
UEBE and their Social Action Ministries, under the direction of Manuel Sarrias and Daniel Banyuls respectively, continue to receive initiatives from the Churches in our beloved Union, such as Murcia, Valencia-Quart and Cerdanyola, among others. Many foreign organizations have shown interest and offered support. As we shared at the beginning, the emergency relief funds from our Churches (OGHS-Lorca) are already in the hands of the brethren that is exercising responsible stewardship with each gift. Yet, Lorca needs you… oh, yes…
     This is an effort, such as in Haiti, Chile, China, Pakistan, Japan and more recently Myanmar and the States, that will require weeks, months, and years for a complete reconstruction of the families, Churches, and communities. Some continue to be unable to open their email messages or can only do so when with friends or family… Others are without landlines or cell phones due to satellite damage. About 80% of the peoples of Lorca have had to move out of town to find rentals or with relatives. The shelter camp site is mainly inhabited by migrants, mainly from Morocco and Equator, which do not return to their countries of origin to avoid losing the little they had left. Disappointment, ghost city, and loneliness are breathed through the city…
     With such high percentage of unemployment in Spain (20.05%, the highest since 1997, and 25% in Lorca), many of them from the Church in Lorca who have been left homeless in an 80%, it seems humanly impossible to reconstruct and restore the houses, the sanctuary, and the shelters… But, with God all is possible, and everything works to our good… We beseech with all our hearts, as you are able and the Lord nudges your heart, to support these families and church in need. On Tuesday the 31, our general secretary in UEBE, pastor Manuel Sarrias, is going to Lorca to meet with town authorities and share in a united Service at the Church. From MOS, pastor Daniel Banyuls continues to coordinate the reconstruction efforts, in coordination with pastor Francisco Martínez and the steering committee. Pastor Abigail Castillo continues to coordinate from her Church in Murcia and with the UMMBE (ABWM), whose national president is from Lorca (Carmen Sánchez), the local, nearby churches’ support. We know God will continue to be faithful to provide the will and the way through each brother and sister that is willing in their heart.
     Each brother and sister in Lorca insists on sharing their deep gratitude for the many examples of loving care they continue to receive in so many ways (we bring two videos from them). We simply remind you that, as many other places affected right now, Lorca needs you!
