May provides us this year with two Mother’s Day: in Spain (and four other countries) it is celebrated on May 1st (Labor Day as well…) and in the States and Puerto Rico (and many others) it is on May 8th… To each mom, our love and our congratulations! This month’s title comes from a very common expression in Spain: “Madre mía” which could be translated as “me, oh, my…” so to speak; though it would literally mean “My mother”.
     The UEBE, our sister/partner convention, is very mission oriented and their ABC (Associació Baptista Certesa) is having the II Missionary Congress on May 2nd. Our workshop is on how missions are carried out in the power of the Holy Spirit, with or without resources… Please keep us in prayer as we share with attendees from the Valencian Community. As a missionary family, we can tie the workshop to UEBE’s theme for the month: youth and Christian family…
     As each month, and for the last time in the academic year, we’ll be in Dénia two Tuesdays. Please keep our participants to the leadership training and workshops in your prayers as each of them is challenged in their faith and service to the Lord. And, of course, we’ll be at different churches on Sundays.
     May also marks the 100th anniversary of Baptist witness in Israel as on May 10, 1911 Shukri Mosa baptized his nephew Louis Hanna in Wadi El Laymoun, near Safad. The Association of Baptist Churches in Israel (ABCI) will celebrate that centennial in Nazareth on May 12-14. Meanwhile, Israel experiences several Remembrance Days in May (Yom HaShoah, Yom Hazikaron, and Yom Ha’atzmaut). Seize this opportunity to pray for our sisters and brothers in Israel, especially the ABCI members witnessing of their faith in Galilee and Central Israel. Pray for peace in Israel and amongst her inhabitants. Both UEBE and ABCI are members of the European Baptist Federation (EBF) and the Baptist World Alliance (BWA). Your region is part of ABC-USA/PR that is also a member of the BWA. We are intertwined in so many ways…
     When we look around at what has been happening around the world in recent months, we say “Madre mía”. We have found that mothers here in Spain are pretty much the same as they are in Colombia, Puerto Rico, the States, Israel, and Chile (our places of origin and where we have lived). Mothers are loving, hard working, disciplinary, multi-taskers… They attempt to balance between home, work, and church life, where they usually take the lead, though there continue to be more male pastoral leadership than female. Mothers encourage their children to come to Jesus Christ and be faithful to Him. They seek to have strong families and to be virtuous women, helpmates to their spouses. To each mother in the past, each mother of the present, and each mother in the future, our prayers and our respect.

“I never thought a little summer vacation would change the lives of our family so much. We went to the Green Lake Mission Conference for the first time in1980. It completely changed our way of thinking about missions. For the next 15 years, we returned for the mission conference almost every year. Our church was fortunate enough to have an endowment for missions, which helped pay for participation and rooms at the conference. We began renting large houses and inviting missionaries and guests for dinner every night. What a way to really get to know the people in the trenches for spreading God's Word across our world! These conferences led to our oldest son serving on the first Extreme Team in 1998, and led to several mission trips for my husband, Dan, myself, and our 3 children. Dan and I are also part of MPTs for our beloved friends. That first trip to Green Lake was probably the best decision we, as parents, made to help our children (and ourselves!) experience and become involved with missions.”

Mayo nos brinda este año dos Día de la Madre: en España (y cuatro países más) se celebra el 1ro de mayo (también el Día del Trabajador/a) y en EE.UU. y Puerto Rico (y otros países) es el 8 de mayo… A cada madre, nuestro amor y nuestras felicitaciones. El título de este mes lo tomamos de una expresión muy común aquí en España: “Madre mía”.
     La UEBE, nuestra convención socia, está muy comprometida con las misiones y una de sus regiones, la ABC (Associació Baptista Certesa) tendrá su II Congreso Misionero el 2 de mayo. Nuestro taller será acerca de cómo llevar a cabo la obra misionera en el poder del Espíritu Santo, con o sin recursos… Ora por lo que compartiremos con cada participante de la Comunidad Valenciana. Como familia misionera, enlazaremos el taller con el tema del mes en la UEBE: juventud y familia cristiana…
     Como cada mes, y por última vez en el año académico, estaremos en Dénia dos  martes. Sigue orando por cada participante de los Cursos de Formación y sus desafíos de fe y servicio al Señor. Y por supuesto, estaremos en diferentes iglesias cada domingo.
     Mayo también marca el aniversario número 100 de testimonio bautista en Israel pues el 10 de mayo de 1911 Shukri Mosa bautizó a su sobrino Louis Hanna en Wadi El Laymoun, cerca de Safad. La Asociación de Iglesias Bautistas en Israel (ABCI, por sus siglas en inglés) celebrará este centenario en Nazaret del 12-14 de mayo. Mientras tanto, Israel experimenta varios Días del Recuerdo en mayo (Yom HaShoah, Yom Hazikaron y Yom Ha’atzmaut). Esta es una buena oportunidad para orar por nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Israel, especialmente los miembros de ABCI dando testimonio de su fe en Galilea y el centro de Israel. Ora por la paz en Israel y entre sus habitantes Tanto la UEBE como ABCI son miembros de la Federación Bautista Europea (EBF, por sus siglas en inglés) y la Alianza Bautista Mundial (BWA, por sus siglas en inglés). Tu región es parte de las IBA-EE.UU./PR que es miembro de la BWA. Así estamos interconectados…
     Al mirar a nuestro alrededor, lo que ha estado pasando estos meses, brota la expresión “Madre mía”. Hemos encontrado que las madres en España son muy similares a las de Colombia, Puerto Rico, EE.UU., Israel y Chile (nuestros países de origen o donde hemos vivido). Las madres son amorosas, trabajadoras, disciplinarias y muy polifacéticas… Intentan balancear el hogar, el trabajo y la vida de iglesia, donde usualmente tienen mayoría aun cuando sigue habiendo mayor liderazgo masculino que femenino. Las madres alientan a su prole a conocer y servir fielmente a Jesucristo. Cada madre se esfuerza para tener una familia fuerte y ser una mujer virtuosa, ayuda idónea para su marido/esposo/cónyuge. Para cada madre del ayer, de hoy y cada madre de mañana, nuestras oraciones y respeto.
