We have just returned from a time of ministry in Xàtiva with our first volunteer team to Spain. We had 12 brothers and sisters from Christ-First (Covina, CA) who sacrificed time, family, and resources to serve the children at Escola Betania (school) and the elders at Llar d’Ancians Corona de l’Estrela (nursing home). They came, grew, and changed in the course of the experience, as did we with them. We praise the Lord for their obedience and willingness to step out in faith, be flexible, and take the plunge into ministry with us in Xàtiva.

Meet The Team…
We met in 2005 via one of the church members, visited them in 2007, have stayed in touch throughout the years, and out of a “skype-a-mission-call” in December 2010, this team was birthed… what do you know? A well balanced team was formed: 3 men and 9 women; 1 aged 18th, 4 in their 20s, 2 in their 30s, 1 in her 40s, and 4 in their 60s; 4 fluent in Spanish (before arriving to Spain) and 5 more that discovered they knew more Spanish than they could tell… We were thrilled to enjoy our time with them in Xàtiva. All 12 of them have shown a desire to return (Yeah!!!).

Meet Escola Betania…
This team was our first in Spain; it was also the first team the church in Xàtiva received!!! Débora, director of Escola Betania, coordinated with us the arrangements for the team, from transportation to housing, from meals to ministry. Together we learned from each other and grew together and closer to each other throughout the week. Our team shared responsibilities (from 9am to 1pm) with the monitors of the 5 xiquets’ groups (1-yr-olds, 2 groups of 2-3, 3-4, and 4-5), and witnessed to kids and monitors alike. The activities included arts and crafts, sing-along time, refreshing in the mini-pool, and some time to share Bible stories. The team took the plunge with these children and embraced them and the monitors with the love of Christ that was evident in all they did.

Meet Llar d’Ancians Corona de l’Estrela…
We were given nap time (siesta, a staple in Spain) after lunch (exquisitely prepared each day by Rosana!!!), but we were all eager to know Xàtiva inside out… So we barely took our time off but rather enjoyed the many history lessons this quaint town has to offer. At 4:30pm each day, Marilén, and her colleague Neus would pick us up to take us to the nursing home, in the outskirts of Xàtiva. What a beautiful place, and what beautiful grandpas and grannies; how not to love them??? We started each of our days with time to share with the residents followed with devotion and singing. Then came maintenance work in the facilities, feeding some of the residents, and (last but not least) our outdoors’ evening meal. Each person in the home loves and cares for one another; the elders are in a good place, the relatives visit often because they want to, not because they have/need to… What a blessing!

Meet IEB Xàtiva’s new leadership…
Our dear Church just received their new resident pastors: Miguel and Esther… what a joy to see them in action. They took the plunge as they landed into Xàtiva, for the ministries God has called them to continue and those He is calling them to initiate. The church has embraced them with love and appreciation for their gifts and their presence in their midst and we look forward to how Xàtiva will continue to grow in numbers and in maturity with their leadership.
     Miguel and Esther shared some stats with the team which confirmed what we’ve been saying all along: we need more hands on deck!!! Barely 1% of Spain’s habitants claim to be Evangelicals… there is 99% unreached… if Jesus taught us to reach out for the 1 lost, how much more urgent when there are 99 out there???
     The youth in Xàtiva played an integral part in this trip as they came along our team at each and every opportunity that came up (or “was provoked”). After hours, lunch together, and a Valencia farewell, all to strengthen the love and friendships that have been established.

So, next time you ask yourself if you’re suited to be in a mission trip, remember: all you need is love and 99% of Spain needs you!!!

Regresamos de nuestro tiempo de ministerio en Xàtiva con nuestro primer grupo de voluntarios en España. Fueron 12 hermanos y hermanas de Christ-First (Covina, CA) que sacrificaron tiempo, familia y recursos para servir la niñez en la Escola Betania (escuela) y la tercera edad en Llar d’Ancians Corona de l’Estrela (hogar de ancianos y ancianas). Vinieron, crecieron y cambiaron en el transcurso de la experiencia, así como nosotros. Bendecimos al Señor por su obediencia y disposición para aventurarse en fe, ser flexibles y sumergirse con nosotros en este ministerio en Xàtiva.

Conoced al equipo…
Les conocimos en 2005 por uno de sus miembros, les visitamos en 2007, nos hemos mantenido en comunicación todo este tiempo, y tras una “llamada-a-la-misión-por-skype” en Diciembre de 2010, este grupo se gestó… ¿quién lo diría? Formaron un equipo muy balanceado: 3 hombres y 9 mujeres; 1 de 18, 4 en sus 20s, 2 en sus 30s, 1 en sus 40s y 4 en sus 60s; 4 sabían Español (antes de llegar a España) y 5 descubrieron que entendían más Español que el que creían… Disfrutamos mucho nuestro tiempo juntos en Xàtiva. Las 12 personas han mostrado deseos de regresar (oh, sí!!!).

Conoced Escola Betania…
Este fue nuestro primer equipo en España; también lo fue para la iglesia en Xàtiva!!! Débora, directora de la Escola Betania, coordinó con nosotros los arreglos del grupo, desde transportación al hospedaje, desde alimentación hasta el ministerio. Juntos aprendimos unos de los otros y nos acercamos más durante esta semana. Nuestro equipo compartió responsabilidades (de 9am a 1pm) con las monitoras de los 5 grupos de xiquets (1 de 1 año, 2 de 2-3, 1 de 3-4 y 1 de 4-5) y dieron testimonio a la niñez y sus monitoras por igual. Las actividades incluyeron manualidades, música, piscina y algunas historias bíblicas. El equipo se sumergió con la niñez y les abrazó junto a sus monitoras con el amor de Cristo que era evidente en todo lo que hicieron.

Conoced Llar d’Ancians Corona de l’Estrela…
Teníamos tiempo para la siesta después del almuerzo (¡¡¡suculentamente preparado cada día por Rosana!!!), pero queríamos conocer Xàtiva… Así que casi no tomamos siesta para disfrutar las incontables lecciones de historia que esta ciudad pintoresca nos ofrece. A las 4:30pm cada día, Marilén, y su colega Neus nos llevaban al hogar de ancianos y ancianas, a las afueras de Xàtiva. Qué lugar tan hermoso y qué hermosos abuelitos y abuelitas; ¿¿¿cómo no amarles??? Comenzábamos cada día conversando con ellos y ellas y luego el devocional y tiempo de cánticos. Seguíamos con trabajos de mantenimiento, alimentando algunos y (por último) cenando juntos como equipo al aire libre. Cada persona en el hogar ama y cuida del prójimo; cada anciano y anciana está en un buen lugar donde los familiares visitan con frecuencia porque quieren, no porque necesiten o tengan que hacerlo. ¡Qué bendición!

Conoced el nuevo liderato en IEB Xàtiva…
Nuestra amada iglesia acaba de recibir sus nuevos pastores: Miguel y Esther… qué gozo verles en acción. Se sumergieron tan pronto aterrizaron en Xàtiva, en los ministerios que Dios les ha llamado a continuar y los que les inspira a comenzar. La iglesia les ha abrazado con amor y aprecio por sus dones y presencia en su medio; anticipamos cómo seguirá creciendo en números y madurez bajo su liderazgo.
     Miguel y Esther compartieron detalles con el equipo de lo que hemos venido diciendo: ¡¡¡necesitamos más gente a bordo!!! Apenas 1% de habitantes en España se confiesa Evangélica… hay un 99% por alcanzar… Si Jesús nos enseñó a alcanzar a la (oveja) perdida, cuánto más urgente es alcanzar a ese 99%???
     La juventud en Xàtiva fue importante en este viaje pues se unieron al equipo en cada oportunidad que se presentó (o “se provocó”). En las noches, comiendo juntos, despedidas en Valencia, todo para fortalecer el amor y amistades que se han establecido.

Así que, la próxima vez que te preguntes si las misiones son para ti, recuerda: ¡¡¡sólo necesitáis amor y el 99% de España os necesita!!!
