Cuando Jesús, diácono de la Iglesia Evangélica Bautista de Basauri, se comunicó con nosotros en noviembre pasado, poco nos imaginábamos cómo este viaje impactaría nuestras vidas… En aquella ocasión la invitación era para ir a conocer la obra en el País Vasco y el porqué necesitan misioneros… Nos envió un documento detallando lo logrado y lo por alcanzar, haciéndonos el llamado a “Macedonia” de Hechos 16 para ir a Vizcaya…

“Pasa a Vizcaya y ayúdanos…”
Nueve meses después hemos concretado la visita y al regresar podemos afirmar: hay “trabajo” en el País Vasco y tú puedes ser clave para lograrlo. El País Vasco se compone de 3 provincias: Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa y Álava. Vizcaya alberga la mitad de la población del País Vasco. Entre sus ciudades de población considerable dentro de Vizcaya, las siguientes 5 siguen sin presencia de iglesia evangélica alguna: Galdakao, Amorebieta, Ermua, Guernica y Bakio. Hay 6 Iglesias de la UEBE [Bilbao, Basauri, Bermeo, Munguía, Vitoria y Santander (Cantabria)]. Hay 8 ciudades con presencia evangélica, mas no de la UEBE (Baracaldo, Getxo, Portugalete, Santurtzi, Leioa, Sestao, Durango y Erandio).

Reality check…
Como es necesario en tantos lugares en España y fuera de España (por la situación económica), el liderato pastoral es en su mayoría bi-vocacional y en casi todas las situaciones compartido. Por lo tanto, la mies sigue siendo mucha y l@s obrer@s siguen siendo poc@s... Algunos de sus pastores que conocimos por referencia o en persona son Oscar (Bilbao), de las Islas Canarias, así como Luiz (Vitoria-Nueva Vida y Basauri), de Brazil y Daniel (Munguía), de Bolivia. Así se van rotando entre las misiones y congregaciones para cubrir sus necesidades. También cuentan con predicadores visitantes de otras regiones con el fin de darse a conocer y conocer los ministerios en otros lugares de España.

El desafío y llamado…
Lo que nuestros ojos han visto y nuestros oídos escuchado es un clamor por “más manos a la obra” en la evangelización de estas ciudades aledañas con más de 15,000 habitantes cada una y una de ellas con casi 30,000 habitantes… Casi 80,000 habitantes que siguen sin escuchar las Buenas Nuevas de Jesucristo. Esa es la carga que sienten l@s casi 180 miembr@s de las 6 iglesias de la UEBE en ese sector… A cada un@ le tocaría alcanzar a 444 personas… ¡Es impactante el fervor y pasión que sienten estos hermanos y estas hermanas por quienes les rodean! Contagioso verles mezclarse entre vascos, brasileños, bolivianos, colombianos y uruguayos, entre otros. Nos decían: “les compartimos a todos por igual, pero reconocemos que los migrantes son quienes responden con mayor prontitud.”

Más allá de sus fronteras…
Fue impactante también verles ir más allá de sus fronteras… Se nos solicitó, por nuestro viaje a Lorca, que les compartiéramos la presentación y actualización de la situación tras los terremotos del 11 de mayo. Pudimos dejar en sus corazones la inquietud de ser parte de la esperanza de restauración y reconstrucción; de poder seguir apoyando a estas familias en Lorca que continúan esforzándose en su servicio al Señor en ese lugar. Así que, Lorca cuenta con sus hermanos y hermanos en el País Vasco.

En cuanto a nosotros…
Después de 9 horas de viaje en autobús ida y otras 9 de regreso, de visitar Basauri, Munguía y Vitoria-Nueva Vida, de conversar alrededor de la mesa con tantas familias, de conocer sus corazones e inquietudes, seguimos comprometidos con aquello para lo que Dios nos tiene en estas tierras… Y 1ra de Corintios 1:18-21 nos alienta en esta “locura de la predicación”…

¿Será que Dios te está inquietando a dedicar tiempo, talento o tesoro a la evangelización y discipulado en el País Vasco? ¿O en la restauración y reconstrucción de las familias en Lorca (OGHS-Lorca)? Sea cual sea tu respuesta, Dios hoy te inquieta a la acción en fe, a salir de tu metro/pie cuadrado e “ir y hacer discípulos a todas las naciones…” empezando por tu Jerusalén y hasta donde El te lleve.

When Jesús, deacon at the Baptist Evangelical Church of Basauri, contacted us last November, little could we imagine how this trip would impact our lives… Back then the invitation was to get to know the ministries in the Basque Country and why they need missionaries… He sent us a detailed document with what had been achieved and what was pending, giving us the call to “Macedonia” as in Acts 16 to come to Vizcaya…

“Come over into Vizcaya and help us…”
Nine months later the visit has been completed and as we are back home we can affirm: there is “work” in the Basque Country and you can be a key to achieve it. The Basque Country has 3 provinces: Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa, and Álava. Vizcaya has half of the population of the Basque Country. Among the most populated cities within Vizcaya, the 5 still lacking an evangelical presence are: Galdakao, Amorebieta, Ermua, Guernica, and Bakio. There are 6 UEBE churches [Bilbao, Basauri, Bermeo, Munguía, Vitoria, and Santander (Cantabria)]. There are 8 cities with evangelical presence, though not from UEBE (Baracaldo, Getxo, Portugalete, Santurtzi, Leioa, Sestao, Durango, and Erandio).

Reality check…
As needed in many places in Spain and outside of Spain (due to finances), the pastoral leadership is mainly bi-vocational and almost always shared. Therefore, the harvest continues to be plentiful and the workers few... Some of the pastors we learned about or met are Oscar (Bilbao), from the Canary Islands, as well as Luiz (Vitoria-New Life and Basauri), from Brazil, and Daniel (Munguía), from Bolivia. They rotate within these congregations and missions to cover their needs. They also have guest preachers from other regions to know of their ministries elsewhere in Spain and to share about their own.

The challenge and calling…
What our eyes saw and our ears heard is a cry for “more hands on deck” in the evangelism efforts of these nearby cities with more than 15,000 habitants each and one of them with almost 30,000 habitants… Almost 80,000 habitants have not heard of the Good News of Jesus Christ. That is the burden that these 180 members of these 6 UEBE churches feel in this area. Each of them would have to reach 444 habitants… Their fervor and passion toward those that surround them is impacting! How they mingle as Basque, Brazilians, Bolivians, Colombians, and Uruguayan, to name a few, is contagious. They told us: “we share with everyone just the same, but we recognize that the migrants respond more promptly.”

Beyond their borders…
What impact to see them go beyond their borders… We were asked, because of our trip to Lorca, to share the presentation and update of the situation after the earthquakes of May 11th. We left in their hearts the concern to be part of the hope of restoration and reconstruction; to continue their support to these families in Lorca that continue their efforts to serve the Lord in that place. Therefore, Lorca can count on their brothers and sisters in the Basque Country.

As for us…
After 9 hours by bus to and 9 more from, of visits in Basauri, Munguía, and Vitoria-New Life, of many conversations around the table with many families, of knowing their hearts and concerns, we continue committed to that for which God has us in this place… And 1st Corinthians 1:18-21 encourages us in this “foolishness of preaching”…
