Lessons from the Olympics; a different transition; life in Hoosier land… any of these could have been the title for this journal…

   We just had the conclusion of the Olympics London 2012. Though much could be said about the opening and closing nights, we draw two lessons from the Olympians (which Paul touches on in various passages in the Scriptures). We usually talk about Christian life being a marathon (and it is) because it is a long range exercise where we develop patience, endurance, and strength. Yet, Bolt’s 100 meters teaches us that each decision is so important as in a split second things can turn for the good or for the worse. We are here to make decisions and we’d better make the right ones, especially the one that has to do with our eternity… Therefore, we press toward the goal whether running a short one or a marathon…
   As you all know by now, this has been quite a different transition for us. We are blessed with US-MPTers in NJ and IN (and PR-MPTers) and being close to these in Indiana has been quite enjoyable. We arrived not knowing how long the stay would be and still do not know how much longer it will be. We have been able to visit churches in our network with both scheduled and unscheduled/surprise visits. We have been able to share birthdays, VBSs, day camps, ice cream socials, end of summer splashes, conversations around the lunch/dinner table or eating ice cream or frozen yogurt… it’s been a much more relaxed and differently-paced transition than we had expected. God has been good to us providing us opportunities to nurture friendships with many we have come to love deeply. We’ll still need to do our one-nighters when visiting the network churches outside of Indiana, but it surely has been a blessing to strengthen relationships without the haste of the running to the next place.
   Being from different places of birth (Colombia, Puerto Rico, PA, FL, and Chile), finding a place like home is always tricky and indeed we’ve decided that wherever we sleep the night becomes our home. We have found the Hoosier hospitality very conducive to our ability to adapt quickly to life in Indiana. Most everything is at hand (including excellent medical care) and the strategic location of our home makes it possible to go most anywhere without much effort. Reading Christian billboards on the various roads we’ve travelled while visiting the churches, and with a car plate saying “In God we trust”, we can sense the desire of this state to continue in consonance with our founding fathers’ intent for the land of the free…
   We’ve been able to smell the roses in Indiana; we are ministering in a different key while continuing our service to Spain and the Women’s Shelter in Lorca that the ABWM of Indiana adopted as their 2012 State Project. The outpouring of love and interest is manifest in being a different church every Sunday and even committed till Reformation Day! Joining the project’s chair, Cori Catellier, who is our friend and MPTer, has been quite a blessing in each of these visits. We smell the roses as we sense the concern of the churches for these women who are being rescued from domestic abuse, prostitution, and addictions. They need their house urgently so that “nobody gets left behind”. We smell the roses as we prepare each week and find different parts of the Scripture to share about, learning and sharing, serving and receiving, blessing and being blessed. Indiana churches are surely keeping us busy and on our toes while allowing us to smell the roses…
   This has been the first time we experience a transition like this, yet we are following a simple rule: trust and obey (like the hymn). Whether a short or a long run, a scheduled or unexpected transition, in a known or new home, we smell the roses as we trust and obey and follow His lead each step of the way. Lecciones de las Olimpiadas, una transición diferente, la vida en Indiana… cualquiera de estos títulos aplicaría para esta nota…

   Recién terminaron las Olimpiadas Londres 2012. Aunque hay mucho que podríamos decir de la apertura y clausura, sacamos dos lecciones de olimpistas (que Pablo utiliza en algunos pasajes de las Escrituras). Usualmente hablamos de la vida cristiana como una maratón (y lo es) pues es un ejercicio a largo alcance donde desarrollamos paciencia, tolerancia y fortaleza. Pero, los 100 metros de Bolt nos enseñan que cada decisión es importante ya que en una milésima de segundo todo puede cambiar para mejor o para peor. Estamos aquí para tomar decisiones y debemos tomar las correctas, especialmente en cuanto a nuestra eternidad… Por lo tanto proseguimos al blanco sea uno corto o de maratón…
   Como ya sabes, ésta ha sido una transición muy diferente para nosotros. Somos bendecidos con un MPT-EE.UU. con personas de NJ y IN (y otro en Puerto Rico) y estar cerca de las de Indiana ha sido gratificante. Llegamos sin saber cuánto tiempo estaríamos y todavía desconocemos cuánto falta. Hemos visitado iglesias de la red tanto de sorpresa como con itinerario. Hemos celebrado juntos cumpleaños, EBV, campamentos, tiempos de refrigerio, de chapuzones, de conversaciones alrededor de la mesa, compartiendo un helado o yogur congelado… ha sido mucho más relajado, a un ritmo más tranquilo, que lo que esperábamos de esta transición. Dios ha sido bueno en darnos oportunidades para profundizar relaciones con muchas personas que amamos. Todavía nos tocará las visitas de una noche fuera de Indiana, pero de seguro ha sido una bendición fortalecer estas amistades sin la prisa de seguir al siguiente lugar.
   Por ser de diferentes lugares de nacimiento (Colombia, Puerto Rico, PA, FL y Chile), es difícil encontrar un lugar como el hogar pero hemos decidido que donde dormimos es nuestro hogar. Damos fe que la hospitalidad en Indiana hizo posible que nos adaptáramos rápidamente. Casi todo está a la mano (incluyendo excelente atención médica) y la localización estratégica de nuestro hogar nos permite ir a casi cualquier lugar sin mayor esfuerzo. Leer letreros cristianos en varias carreteras al viajar para las Iglesias y con licencias de carro que leen “In God we trust”/En Dios confiamos, percibimos un estado que desea seguir en consonancia con la intención de los padres fundadores de la tierra de l@s libres…
   Hemos podido oler las flores en Indiana; estamos ministrando en otro ritmo mientras continuamos nuestro servicio a España y la Casa de Acogida para Mujeres en Lorca que las ABWM de Indiana adoptaron como su Proyecto Estatal 2012. Las demostraciones de amor e interés se manifiestan en iglesias visitadas cada domingo y comprometid@s ¡hasta el Día de la Reforma! Unirnos a la presidenta del proyecto, Cori Catellier, nuestra amiga y MPTer, ha sido una bendición en cada una de las visitas. Olemos las rosas al percibir la preocupación de las Iglesias por esas mujeres que son rescatadas de la violencia doméstica, la prostitución y las adicciones. Necesitan urgentemente su nueva casa para “que nadie se quede atrás”. Olemos las rosas al prepararnos cada semana y encontramos diferentes partes de la Escritura para compartirles, aprendiendo y compartiendo, sirviendo y recibiendo, bendiciendo y siendo bendecidos. Las iglesias en Indiana nos mantienen ocupados y expectantes a la vez que nos permiten oler las rosas…
   Es la primera vez que experimentamos una transición así, pero seguimos una regla sencilla: confía y obedece (como el himno: Obedecer). Sea una carrera corta o una maratón, una transición planificada o inesperada, un hogar conocido o nuevo, olemos las rosas al confiar y obedecer y seguir Sus pisadas en cada paso del camino. ¡Anímate a seguirlo cuando te pase!
