Sunday morning was a wonderful annual
celebration of the harvest at the local church, many members bringing gifts of
their produce. It began with baptisms at 9:30. Four choirs sang--Small
children (about 75 in that group), adolescent choir (probably the same size),
young adults, and adults. Fantastic music! After music, preaching, and
prayers, the service ended about 1:00. Thanks to the great translation by Elio,
we were able to follow, although I am catching a bit of French.
After church we took the afternoon off to
climb the mountain right next to Haut Limbe. These amazing young men, Chris and
Kennedy, who are visiting here escorted us. We actually only went up about
halfway; next time we will train beforehand! The boys were gracious, though,
and were great tour guides. Kennedy has lived here, knows tons if history, and
speaks Creole, so what more could we ask? Well, we asked them about visiting
the beach, and they were happy to oblige as they like to snorkel. After about a
30 minute drive over probably the roughest road I've ever taken, we were at the
bay where Christopher Columbus first landed! Fish dinners (yes, whole fish on
the plate) made for a tasty meal. The black sand beach was really nice, the
water refreshingly warm.
That great day off was important as we
really feel we are now in the home stretch of our time here. There is so much
more we could do with just a little more time! Monday morning we were up
by 6:00, enjoying the birds, blue skies, and another tasty breakfast before
tackling computer networks (Dann) and some serious packing (Nancy). Laurie and
I have made good progress, but we know I will leave with much left to be
done.
I had plans to meet last night and today
for knitting which were postponed, but I've made a few washcloths myself just
for fun. I expect those meetings will happen Tuesday.
Thanks for your prayers and support.
Blessings to you all,
Nancy
