A Unifying Event

I have observed that in my country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, there is always tension between tribes. This prevents people from being honest when in the midst of persons from different tribes. This is true in church and outside of it. In Haiti, there is a similar tension between Protestant, Catholic and voodoo believers.

I came up with the idea of organizing a soccer game for people ages 50 to 150. The dream became a reality when on Sunday, August 26, more than 1,500 people of all ages gathered at the Heneise soccer field to watch men and women of 50 years on up to play in their unique way. All forgot that we have religion that divides us in lieu of uniting us. The president’s wife and daughter of the school’s founder, Mrs. Laurel Casseus said that she has never seen so many people united around one event around here since the school opened in 1947. This was a big achievement in reducing social tension and creating a bridge between people. It was a time when we all forgot that we have problems.

I continue to pray and to hope that people come to realize what we gain by being and working together than being divided. I hope that this soccer match can serve as a bridge, a beginning of a dialogue with those we are most concerned about.
