The thrill of sending a letter to India!
Girls Helping Girls
Antonia didn´t
really know what to expect when she came to the Girls´ Club mid-winter
gathering a few weeks ago. She recently joined our newest club that meets in
the home of a member of “Community of Love,” the church in Chivilcan. This is
in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Temuco and is made up of girls from
un-churched homes. These girls have never been to Sunday School.
At the all-day activity, we gave the girls manicures, played games, and did crafts. All of our crafts were related to the launch of this years´ mission project, “Puente de Amor.”
Puente de Amor is a mission endeavor started by a Chilean
missionary, Tomás Lamperin. He and his brother have been evangelists in India for
more than 10 years. Recently, they felt lead to join the fight against human
trafficking in India and Nepal, where more than 15,000 girls and women are
forced into prostitution annually. Their organization purchased a home and
provided foster parents to care for the young girls who have been rescued. The week before this event they brought seven girls home to a new life.
Antonia writes a letter
After hearing
about Puente de Amor, Antonia and her friends came to life. They made
cards to send to all of the rescued girls and brainstormed ideas that would
raise funds for the girls´ new home, to help them buy clothes and beds, and
blankets. They made bookmarks to carry at school as reminders to pray for their
peers in India, who have suffered so deeply.
But, as you
know, the joy of participating in Gods´ mission goes far deeper than the
satisfaction we feel when we help others. It is as if He prepares good works
for us to do, which minister to our own deep needs. You see, Antonia, like many
of her friends, not only lives in poverty, but she also has her father in
prison. Antonia´s life has been hard, and there is no promise that it will get
easier any time soon. But her load has been made lighter, because of the
friends and companions she has found in the Girls´ Club, and by accepting the
gift of caring about some little girls on the other side of the world, and
being their friend.
One of the letters written by the Girls´ Clubs members:
My name is
Karla. I am ten years old, and when I learned about your story many things went
through my head. So I promise to pray for you, and now I say good-bye with a
kiss and lots of prayers.
(Names of
the girls have been changed to protect their privacy.)
