Dear Loved Ones,

 

Greeting. Let us go to Mondye, a small community close to the city Limbe, about 4 Miles from our house. The community had about 100 houses in 2010, close to 689 people living there and only two latrines.

 

When the cholera epidemic broke in the Country after the deadly 2010 earthquake, Mondye cried for many of its habitants. Many of them died. Mondye had the highest death toll from cholera epidemic in the North. Since we don’t die of natural death, the Mondye people explained that those dying were being killed by bad guys, the sorcerers or the Houngan in the Haitian Creole. It was difficult to explain to them that they were dying because the community lacked latrines and hygiene in general.

 

Mme Grimard Abel, one of Kihomi health agent, visited the community and took time to teach, explain and convince them that they needed latrines and practice hygiene. Kihomi got involved in their education. Slowly, Mondye community is changing.

 

We have now provided them with a professional water pump. They are able to have clean water without any hassle of traveling miles and fear of being contaminated by water born diseases.  

 

Our goal is to add another pump, provide the children with soccer balls and intensify health education.

Dear Supporters,

 

I’m sure you know that the lack of clean water kills more people each year than all the wars and natural disasters combined.  Here Nzunga has partnered with LifeWater Canada to drill a well, decontaminate it, cap it and provide a pump.  This is a newer style pump that has less maintenance problems.  It costs approximately $3500 for a well depending on depth and how far from CAP it is.  With LifeWater Canada’s equipment and expertise we can drill deeper and the final set up is more robust.  You can see from the pictures that a well draws a crowd, especially young girls who are the traditional water fetchers.  You can contribute to Nzunga’s clean water project that covers many aspects of providing clean water.  Put “Nzunga’s clean water” on the memo line of your check or in the remarks section if you are donating on-line.  Thanks for caring.
