Dear Loved Ones,

Greeting. In 1998, we told many people back home that we were going to Haiti. They were disappointed because we were leaving but also disappointed because for them Haiti means poverty. This is what the media has taught us to believe. Since our arrival in this beautiful Island, we have seen many changes happening. Many people are responding to the challenges to better the country and make it a paradise in the Caribe. 

What have we witnessed so far?

Since 1998 we waited 3 years before communicating with our family members back in Congo, DRC. Today cell phones are all over. People can use Whats up, emails, etc.  Our own students have become our today bosses. They are all over the country holding major and key positions in private and public sectors.  American Airlines lands just at our doorsteps helping people to get out and in easily. Motorcycles are all over helping people to move quickly even though they are very risky. Small women business is booming alongside the main streets.

Lately, a dry cleaning has just opened at the entrance of our university. For us this is a miracle we did not dream to see in our lifetime in Haiti. They use bamboos to produce the steam to iron.   This is the Haiti that gives us hope for the future. This is our Haiti where people fall and get up, where people never get discouraged.

This is Haiti where God has called us to rejoice and to cry with our people.

The 2010 earthquake was a terrible devastating event.   250000 killed and many more badly hurt.  It created so many orphans that little Haiti now leads the world.  Many left homeless and the center of government with all its records destroyed.   If you look for a silver lining to this it is the tremendous advancements we see since then.  Improvements of infrastructure such as roads, bridges and power have been wonderful fueled by the money that came in from around the world.  I have talked to people that have been going to Haiti for 20 or 30 years on mission trips.  They told me that they have never seen such change in a relative short time.  Haiti is still very poor and has a long way to go but one must rejoice at what is going right.  Also, the spirit of entrepreneurship seems to be blossoming.  Motorcycles used as taxi’s, and this story of someone starting a dry-cleaning service are examples.
