They were there, a peasant girl and a sociologist. Elda a poor Mayan girl of nine years old and Liliana a Puerto Rican retired university professor of sociology. Each one of them, different in ages, from completely different worlds, completely unlike histories, living so far, far away from each other, and yet… they were together as if there was nothing else in the world but themselves and what they were sharing. What could draw them together like that?  

 
Liliana came on October 2012 as part of the team providing the Art and Communication for Peace’s Workshop, to give seminarian students and other young people from allied organizations education on Conflict Transformation, along with others specialists who gave audio visual and performance tools to support their work on peace building and conflict transformation. At Chacacal, one of the indigenous communities we serve, we gathered to take some pictures and complete some of the student’s videos. In this community Elda’s grandmother out of gratitude, gave to the seminary part of her land to plant crops for our students and to build a small structure for lodging during the theological trainings and workshops we give to the pastors. 
 
In this setting, that afternoon Liliana was reading under a tree the book of former Superior Court judge, William Fred Santiago, “Venceremos… recobro de ML King, Jr.” (We will prevail… recovery of ML King Jr.) It was a hot day and some of the kids were playing under the trees’ shades or sleeping or helping with house chores. Yet, Elda mystically drawn to Liliana by her quiet reading, asked her: what are you reading? And with that, the series of answers to the “whys” and “tell me more” of Elda, not only entangled Elda’s interest for days, but filled Liliana with joy and with that deep responsibility of sharing a life changing story. In this storytelling, Elda lived together with MLK his struggle to summon his people to face the painful story of abuse of all kinds by those who believed themselves superiors. She understood what it’s like, because she is poor, indigenous and female. She also heard that God calls us to fight for the dream of a just and fraternal society, because we all deserve the Lekil kuxlejal, the abundant life Jesus promised. Elda, whose sister already left school to help the family, is in turn. Poverty pushes children from Mayan communities to find work while still young, to help their families. Elda, who loves to learn and wants to finish her schooling was inspired by this story that opens the possibility of a different reality. Her beautiful dark brown eyes opened wide with wonder, shining for more. More hope?  
 
The promise to give her a copy of the book was set. Yet, it was not until 5 months later that together with Liliana encountered Judge William and after telling him the story of Elda, he autographed the book for Elda. On my last visit to Chiapas in April, though I couldn’t get to Chacacal, I sent the book with Eleazar to be given to this shy but resilient child who, like MLK, dreams a better world.
 
What pull all of us together? I truly believe that the deep yearning for peace that outpours from our hearts, always reach up to God, “Heart of Heaven and Heart of Earth.” It doesn’t matter whether you are a man or woman or child. It doesn’t matter your language or nation or race. It does matter if you believe that “Heart of Heaven and Heart of Earth” with infinite mercy and grace draws us together and crosses our paths to become builders of a different future. God pulls you and I. Pulled William, Liliana, Elda, Eleazar, Mario, Ricardo, Dalia, all of us, our minds, hearts and abilities in order to touch one another, to learn and grow together; to become one, large heart beat attuned to the Spirit’s desire for Peace.
 
Thanks for your prayers, for your steadfast love and financial support. You have made possible this crossroad of lives! Maybe, if God calls her, Elda could become a future leader to her community. We as SIM want to be there for her, to support her, to learn from her. We will like that you could also be here at Chiapas, if you can with your presence, but if not, support this ministry with your prayers and offerings to accompany this girl to reach her dream. 

Please, keep us close to your heart. After Doris' illness, we are being guide to follow new paths in our lives! We will tell you soon! 

May the Lord that encounters us all in the path, give you faith to follow the Spirit's hearth!

Una niña, Una mujer, Un juez y un Sueño
 
Allí estaban ellas, una campesina y una socióloga. Elda, una niña maya, pobre, de nueve años y Liliana puertorriqueña, ex-catedrática de sociología. Cada una de ellas, de diferentes edades, de mundos completamente diferentes, con historias disímiles, con vidas tan lejanas, una de la otra; y sin embargo... allí estaban, juntas, como si no existiera nada más en el mundo, solo ellas y lo que estaban compartiendo. ¿Qué podría unirlos así?
 
Liliana llegó al SIM en octubre del 2012 como parte del equipo del taller de Arte y Comunicación para la Paz, para que los estudiantes seminaristas y otros jóvenes de organizaciones aliadas recibieran educación en la transformación de conflictos. Otros especialistas dieron herramientas audiovisuales para apoyar el trabajo en la construcción de la paz y la transformación de conflictos. En Chacacal, una de las comunidades indígenas que servimos, llegamos para tomar algunas fotografías y completar algunos de los videos de los estudiantes. La hna Teresa, abuela de Elda por gratitud, le donó parte de su tierra al seminario para cultivar alimento para nuestros estudiantes y para construir una pequeña estructura para nuestro alojamiento durante los entrenamientos teológicos y talleres que damos a los pastores.
 
Esa tarde Liliana leía debajo de un árbol el libro del ex juez del Tribunal Superior William Fred Santiago, "Venceremos... recobro de MLK, Jr." Era un día caluroso y algunos de los niños estaban jugando bajo la sombra de los árboles o durmiendo o ayudando con las tareas de la casa. Sin embargo, Elda místicamente atraída por la quieta lectura de Liliana, le preguntó: ¿Qué estás leyendo? Y con eso, se dio la larga serie de respuestas a los "porqués" y los "cuéntame más" de Elda. La niña enredada ya en una historia que cambia la vida y Liliana invertida con alegría y destreza en contarla, compartieron sus sueños. Así, Elda vivió junto con MLK su lucha para convocar a su pueblo y enfrentar la dolorosa historia de abuso de todo tipo por los que se creían superiores. Lo entendió porque ella es pobre, indígena y mujer. También oyó que Dios nos llama a luchar por el sueño de una sociedad justa y fraterna, porque todos merecemos el Lekil kuxlejal, la vida abundante Jesús prometió. Elda, cuya hermana ya dejó la escuela para ayudar a la familia, está en turno. La pobreza empuja a los niños de las comunidades mayas a buscar trabajo, aun chiquitos, para ayudar a sus familias. A Elda, que le encanta aprender y que sueña con terminar su escuela, esta historia le inspiró porque abre la posibilidad de una realidad diferente. Ante la historia, sus hermosos ojos marrón oscuros se abrieron con admiración, brillando, esperando más. ¿Más esperanza?
 
Quedó la promesa de darle una copia del libro. Sin embargo, no fue hasta 5 meses después que nos encontramos con el autor, quien después de contarle la historia de Elda, le autografió un libro. En mi última visita a Chiapas en abril, no pude llegar a Chacacal, pero envié el libro con Eleazar a esta niña, tímida pero resiliente quien al igual que MLK, sueña un mundo mejor. 

¿Qué nos juntó? Creo sinceramente que el profundo anhelo de paz que brota de nuestros corazones, llega hasta Dios, “Corazón de la tierra y Corazón del cielo." No importa si eres un hombre, mujer o niño/a. No importa tu idioma o nación o raza. Importa si crees que el "Corazón del cielo y Corazón de la tierra" con gracia y misericordia infinita nos reúne y cruza nuestros caminos para hacernos constructores de un futuro diferente. Dios nos hala a ti y a mí. Haló a William, a Liliana, a Elda, Eleazar, Mario, Ricardo, Dalia, a todos nosotros. Dios junta nuestras mentes, corazones y habilidades para que nos podamos acercar, aprender y crecer juntos. Nos junta para convertirnos en un solo gran latido del corazón en sintonía con el querer del Espíritu de paz
 
Gracias por sus oraciones, por su amor y apoyo financiero. ¡Ustedes hacen posible este cruce de vidas! Tal vez, si Dios llama a Elda, ella podría convertirse en una líder de su comunidad. Como SIM queremos estar allí para ella. Anhelamos que tú también puedas estar aquí en Chiapas, si puedes con tu presencia, pero si no; con tus oraciones y ofrendas. Ayúdanos en este ministerio que puede acompañar a esta niña para alcanzar su sueño. 

¡Manténnos cerca de tu corazón! Luego de la enfermedad de Doris, estamos siendo guiados hacia nuevas sendas de vida. Ya les contaremos.

¡Que el Dios que nos encuentra en el camino, nos de a todos/as fe para seguir el corazón del Espíritu de vida!
